Encouraging language through encouraging pauses!

I like to start encouraging language development through repetitive songs and books that are predictable and have a word they know to repeat. Usually the words at ends of sentences or that have a big emphasis in the story/song.

These are usually simple songs or sounds!

As they get older, you can start developing language and critical thinking skills more by asking open ended questions like “where did we go?” “How are we going to get there?” “What are we going to play with?”

There might be an answer you’re looking for, but don’t make it the “right” answer, explore their answers and language! Using questions can help you with transitions and working together as a team too.

An example of a potential convo between you and your young toddler:
Adult: “Do you remember where we’re going?”
Tot: “park!”
Adult: “oh the park would be really fun we should do that later. But we’re actually going to go to where we ride the shopping carts! Do you know where that is?”
Tot: “store!”
Adult: “yes the store! How are we going to get there?”
Tot: “bike!”
Adult: “oh the bike would be so fun too but I think that might be too far for us on our bike. What does I drive us in?”
Tot: “car!”
Adult: “yes the car! Let’s go find it!”

Build vocab, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and teamwork! Win win win, win 🥇

I went on vacation with my nanny family for the past month and there was a lot of new environments, routines, and places for little one to explore and learn!

This brought up a lot of feelings of disappointment because little man was in vacation mode and just wanted to party all of the time.

A favorite was riding around on the golf cart with his grandparents! (A fav of mine too, I happily took any activity opportunity that took me off of my feet with a broken toe 😂)

But, we weren’t always ready for this activity, and this is how we transitioned from activity to activity when he’s REALLY ready to go.

It didn’t prevent every meltdown, which is not the goal- we can’t save our children from experiencing painful emotions (or ourselves), but sometimes through communication, we can prevent some tears and through increasing understanding.

Swing and bubbles are two of my joy filled activities so @itsdevynwithawhy and I are fusing them together in Bubble Bebop to offer a fun, playful, free flowing, and unique space to learn the basics of East Coast Swing with my special silly and playful twists!

This is an event open to swing dancers, never-danced-in-their-lifers, parents, grandparents, adults who don’t have any kids, singles, couples, toddlers, high schoolers, come one come all!

This is a FREE event with an encouragement to donate (to help supply bubbles and more fun in the future!!) but you MUST reserve your spot with tickets for you and your little ones!

Fun facttttt that many of you probably don’t know and would never guess:

I used to have pretty intense social anxiety and identify as an introvert!

Now I feel more of an ambivert (I NEED alone time to recharge) but I don’t feel social anxiety much anymore (unless I have had stimulants like caffeine that just cause anxiety in general for me)

It’s been years of healing, releasing, and growing to get to a place where I feel not just comfortable, but confident taking up space, making noise, and frolicking around as a bubble fairy😂🫧

I can’t say it’s been any ONE thing, because any kind of healing and growth happens from an accumulation of resources and support- but there have been three core pieces for me that have helped me reclaim my own confidence and peace with holding the judgement of other people & social anxiety:

🧚🏼‍♀️rescripting what’s happening in my head- saying, writing, and thinking about affirmations that contradict what I believed about myself
🧚🏼‍♀️inner child work to reconnect with those wounded pieces of me so I don’t feel so much shame around my anxiety/fears
🧚🏼‍♀️DANCING, there was a moment at a full moon ceremony silent disco hosted by a friend where something just….opened within me and I finally gave myself the permission to stop giving a damn what other people thought about me (right after this was the birth of KOMA) and I danced my heart out on the beach at night, wearing headphones, looking like a full blown GOOF and feeling ALIVE

I hope you give yourself some grace today and everyday my friend🫧💖

I can’t tell you how many times people have compared me to Jess from New Girl….I feel it’s pretty accurate especially this quote🤔 thoughts???

All of these are true, especially the glitter one😂

I had a young girl approach me as I was crouched over a bubble rod hammering it into the ground with a rubber mallet and she says “you can be strong and make bubbles!”

And a little piece of me lit up that THAT is what she saw.

A woman expressing her strength and softness.

Weaving between the dainty fairy frolick and then getting to WORK building this bubble empire.

Hosting bubble events, nannying, inner child work…all of this work where I get to be a part of children’s lives and play in the depths of emotion: joy and despair, bravery and fear, love and heartbreak.

What a gift what a gift what a gift.

But also…what a pressure we all feel right?

To always be making more of ourselves
Always be proving ourselves
Always be outshining the “I”s of the past.

And how much of that pressure that was passed down and down and down from generations of our family and parents.

Many of you local followers have seen me poppin around (pun will always be intended) St Petersburg and Tampa for kids events, parties, and classes!

I used to host kids outdoor movement adventure classes to bring families and children together to play and enjoy time and presence together.

I currently host bubble pop-up events for community gatherings, but I also bring the fun to private parties and events to encourage celebration and joy for ALL kinds of events!

Many of you local followers have seen me poppin around (pun will always be intended) St Petersburg and Tampa for kids events, parties, and classes!

I used to host kids outdoor movement adventure classes to bring families and children together to play and enjoy time and presence together.

I currently host bubble pop-up events for community gatherings, but I also bring the fun to private parties and events to encourage celebration and joy for ALL kinds of events!

I remember holding and looking at him while my sister was resting after birth thinking “this is going to fly by so fast, remember this”. His chubby little round face, those little newborn suckles and smacks, sleepy eyes, new baby smell, that hospital room “quiet” with all of the beeps and shuffling of feet outside of the room

Kaikani Vanity, or as most of you know him, Kaia, was the backbone of KOMA when I first started building this local bubble empire.

Our relationship shifted from partners, to friends and roommates early last year, but his support of me and my work never ceased.

I moved out of our shared home this past weekend and have been reflecting on how much love and care he’s put into my life and success, without any expectation from me.

I remember him coming home one day and excitedly opening an Amazon box saying “look at this giant watermelon ball I bought!” 😂 (yes THAT giant watermelon ball)

He put so much time, energy, and resources into KOMA and genuinely loved spending time connecting and playing with the children of our community.

He’s always ready to roll around with me in the grass as alligators, dedicates FULLY to the chicken role, and patiently guides and teaches children how to create and blow bubbles.

This tender and loving man is a blessing to this planet and I’m grateful I’ve had him as such an intimate part of my life these past few years.

I’m grateful we’ve been able to navigate really tender and emotional moments together as previous partners and were able to come into a friendship with a deep respect and honoring of each other.

Find emotional expression that helps give the emotion a voice: movement, writing, painting, singing.

It doesn’t matter what it is, just :
1. Use the body
2. Let it say something

Give the emotion a voice
Give it a movement

Turn stone to water
Letting the feeling flow and not harden in the pits of suppression

Respect your feelings enough to care about what it has to tell you, show you, give you.

Sometimes the movement is crying on the floor.
Sometimes the movement is dancing on the floor.
Sometimes the movement is crying while dancing on the floor.

Whatever you do, don’t do nothing
Don’t tell it it’s being too much
Don’t distract it
Don’t blow it off, sweep it under the rug

In the beginning, movement is stillness
Learning to make peace with the uncomfortable
Making friends with the tightness
Making friends with the fear
Anxiety
Disappointment

Offering it empathy,
giving it permission to temporarily be in the body,
knowing that this won’t be their permanent home because they get to move through you at the pace it needs to

Don’t mistake ignoring for stillness.
Suppressing emotion isn’t accepting emotion

We’re not using movement to get rid of these emotions. To shun them. To purge from them.

We’re using movement as an expression
Looking at the anxiety and asking, “hey, wanna dance?”

Inviting them into the tango,
Playing between lead and follow

And when they’re ready, they’ll choose to move on, grateful for the friendship you’ve made,
for the voice you gave them

Find emotional expression that helps give the emotion a voice: movement, writing, painting, singing.

It doesn’t matter what it is, just :
1. Use the body
2. Let it say something

Give the emotion a voice
Give it a movement

Turn stone to water
Letting the feeling flow and not harden in the pits of suppression

Respect your feelings enough to care about what it has to tell you, show you, give you.

Sometimes the movement is crying on the floor.
Sometimes the movement is dancing on the floor.
Sometimes the movement is crying while dancing on the floor.

Whatever you do, don’t do nothing
Don’t tell it it’s being too much
Don’t distract it
Don’t blow it off, sweep it under the rug

In the beginning, movement is stillness
Learning to make peace with the uncomfortable
Making friends with the tightness
Making friends with the fear
Anxiety
Disappointment

Offering it empathy,
giving it permission to temporarily be in the body,
knowing that this won’t be their permanent home because they get to move through you at the pace it needs to

Don’t mistake ignoring for stillness.
Suppressing emotion isn’t accepting emotion

We’re not using movement to get rid of these emotions. To shun them. To purge from them.

We’re using movement as an expression
Looking at the anxiety and asking, “hey, wanna dance?”

Inviting them into the tango,
Playing between lead and follow

And when they’re ready, they’ll choose to move on, grateful for the friendship you’ve made,
for the voice you gave them

This year didn’t feel like I was coming out of youth like the past years of my life had.

This year felt like a coming into,
less shedding and more extension.

Becoming who I could feel underneath all of those layers that felt like chains around my limbs.

My early 20s being the most confronting, heartbreaking, and challenging years of my life.

Tying my shoes and running headfirst into unraveling my karma.

Knowing that that id be better for it on the other side.

Knowing that it was my duty to make the hard decisions, say the hard things, do the hard work that so many couldn’t or wouldn’t because walking my walk felt less like a choice and more like a commitment I made in this life time

And here I am, on the other side, and she was so right.

I think the soft underlying grief we feel around our birthdays is our knowing and unconscious understanding of inevitable deaths

The me’s that have faded from Me

And then there’s that simultaneous ping of hope, excitement, faith around our birthdays

The me’s that are finding Me

Hands out, palms up, receiving all there is to hold for me in this next year of my life

Welcoming all of the creation, destruction, learning, loving, giving, moving, making, and molding

My intentions for this year:

Commitment to my education and learning. Continuing to build my communities and work. Trusting and making unwavering choices. Loving me all the way in all ways, prioritizing myself beyond just my successes.

Goals for this year:

•In love: expand and open my heart in ways that feel the most tender or triggering. letting myself love and be loved to depths I haven’t experienced yet

•in work: establish Outdoor Movement Adventures. Begin school at SPC. Get certified in Conscious Discipline and study ACT therapy.

•personal: practice more slow, intentional movements. Devoting to myself through a morning and evening practice. Letting there be time to be bored so I can explore Me beyond distractions and noise and movement. Daily meditation and visualization practices.

Connections are moments of bonding, familiarity, and love.

Simple but intentional and real connections make a WORLD of difference to developing minds.

Moving my body today and wasn’t planning on this emotionally deep reel😂 I was just going to show you how my “workouts” look like because I hate doing rigid exercises and have realized that with my brain that gets distracted pretty quickly and easily, finding workouts that are playful and fun keep me moving.

KOMA began from this place. Finding a class that gave space for kids and adults to move in a playful way without rigid expectations.

I have a piece of my journal from last year that I wrote “stop wishing your mind were like someone else’s and start loving yours”

This applies to all parts of my experience where I feel like I’m not fitting into how I should be: my work, my mind, my love, etc etc.

And for the most part, I’ve lived by this advice. I’ve moved in ways that work for me.

I hula hoop and do squats at the same time, I explored love within polyamorous dynamics for years, embraced my queerness, I’ve created a hodgepodge of incredible work in my life.

And it’s made for an interesting life, one I wouldn’t trade for any boxes that I used to desire.
